What is a “Feedback/Critique” submission?

Great question! So, let’s break this down. A “Fast Pass” submission means you skip the line, and its the next thing we read. A “Reader Notes” submission is a regular submission, and does our regular process, but we will share our reader notes with you about your piece. So, just a few lines, typically.

A “Feedback/Critique” is a submission, but it also gets a full review/feedback treatment from our Story Editor.  A thorough inline content-editing critique to sharpen ideas, strengthen structure, and refine language for a more cohesive, compelling story. Plus three to six pages of feedback that celebrate strengths, pinpoint opportunities to heighten clarity, tension, and emotional resonance, and a list of curated resources to support your growth on future projects.

Are my chances of getting accepted better if I use the “Feedback/Critique” system?

Nope. You receive the same level of reading and consideration as everyone else. But you get something arguably even more valuable: an experienced eye going through your story with a fine-toothed comb, helping to point you in the right direction.

Why $80USD, that seems like a random amount?

Honestly, we're trying to limit the number of these requests. We're not a vanity press, and this isn't our main source of funding. We are first a literary magazine. However, due to the high demand for this service, we decided to shoot for offering it to 2-3 people a month. We're confident in our abilities, but we needed to set a higher price to reduce the number of requests so we don’t get buried.

What do you do with the extra money?

First, we pay the Story Editor for the development review. That’s only fair. A portion of the fee also helps keep the lights on at After Dinner Conversation Publishing. Submitting via the “Feedback/Critique” option is a win/win. You receive expert guidance to improve your writing, and 100% of your payment supports an independent literary publisher.
